These are not photographs!

Nigeria: These are not photographs taken from a high end camera and not by a professional photographer.

These are paintings by Oresegun Olumide, a 35-year old Lagos artist who specializes in oil paintings. Since a few weeks Oresegun’s life-like art, which he describes as "hyper reality", has gone viral across various social media platforms leaving many in awe.

A student of Yaba College of Technology in Lagos, he began painting professionally in 2008. In 2011 he held his first exhibition at a gallery in Ikorodu, a densely populated town in Lagos.

When he shared his two new paintings on Facebook, they were liked and shared several thousand times shocking Olumide himself. Images of his work have been shared on Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat and the number of followers on Instagram simply sky rocketed. “I am excited because I did not expect it,” he said.

“I had not uploaded any images for a while as I was preparing for my next exhibition. Last week, I decided to share one of my new works to show people what to expect from new showcase and it began to be shared rapidly. I got compliments and within days, it went viral,” he said.

He has now received offers from United Kingdom and America to exhibit his paintings. “The only time I used social media previously was when I needed to share images of my work but now I can see the power of social media and I plan to use it more,” he said.
